    | AR88 Communications Receiver During the war there existed an
      insatiable demand for ground station receivers for the multifarious jobs
      of point to point communication, air to ground reception and intelligence
      monitoring.
 
 In the last stages of the war a receiver came into service
      which was regarded by delighted operators as representing the (then)
      ultimate for communication purposes.
 
 This was the AR88,  which
      from its ruggedness, its electrical specification and its appearance both
      inside and out  that it had been developed almost regardless of cost.
 
 Three versions of the AR88 were available, the basic model, the AR88D with
      output into 600ohm balanced line and the AR88LF with long waves. .

    | In the RAF service these models were
      subjected to modifications to become R1556/1556A/B. Use of the LF version
      had the advantage of the 200 kc/s Light Programme transmission.

      Coverage
 AR88D R1556A, 535 to 32000 kc/s in 6 bands.
 
 Band 1 :-
      535 to 1600 kc/s.
 Band 2 :- 1570 to 4550 kc/s.
 Band 3 :- 4450
      to 12150 kc/s.
 Band 4 :- 11900 to 16600 kc/s.
 Band 5 :- 16100
      to 22700 kc/s.
 Band 6 :- 22000 to 32000 kc/s.
 
 Intermediate
      Frequency
 455kc/s
    The IF frequency may vary with model.
 
 Power Supply:- 100 to 117, 117 to
      135, 135 to 165, 195 to 230, 200 to 260volts (50 to 60 cycles)
 It is
      possible to operate the receiver under portable conditions if 12 amp from
      a 6volt accumulator can be tolerated; for this service a vibrator 
      power unit type M1-8319 was required.

      different Frequency Coverage.

      Bands.
 
 Band 1 :- 73 to 205 kc/s.
 Band
      2 :- 195 to 550 kc/s.
 Band 3 :- 1480 to 4400 kc/s.
 Band 4 :-
      4250 to 12150 kc/s.
 Band 5 :- 11900 to 19500kc/s.
 Band 6 :-
      19000 to 30500 kc/s.
 
 Intermediate Frequency
 735 kc/s.
 
 The weight
      of these units were 100 lbs - 45.3kg.
 
 The unit in the top picture (R1556A)
      has been fully renovated, including being re-painted (black crackled), and
      is in full working order.
